A Week of Firsts: Baking Buns and Cooking Steak at Home

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about cooking, it’s that the kitchen is the best place to try something new. This past week, I stepped out of my bread-making comfort zone and gave myself a challenge: bake buns for the first time and cook steak almost restaurant-style. Spoiler alert, I was pleasantly surprised!

Whether you’re a home cook looking to sharpen your skills or simply need some kitchen inspiration, here’s a peek into my week of firsts.

First Attempt: Soft, Pillowy Buns

Bread is my domain, I’ve perfected my loaves over time but buns felt like a different story. To my surprise, my first batch came out soft, fluffy and perfect for burgers and breakfast buns.

Tip for beginners: The secret to soft buns is patience. Give your dough enough time to rest and rise and don’t rush the baking process.

I’ll be sharing the full recipe once I’ve tested it a few more times (I want it to be foolproof for anyone who tries it). Stay tuned!

First Attempt: Restaurant-Style Steak at Home

I’ve always loved a good steak!  juicy, tender and cooked medium-rare. Recreating that steakhouse magic at home? That’s been a little intimidating but this week, I gave it a shot and honestly, it came pretty close!

Here’s what worked for me:

  • Bring it to room temperature: Letting the steak sit out before cooking helps it cook evenly.
  • Sear on high heat: A super-hot pan is the key to that golden brown crust.
  • Butter basting: Adding butter, garlic and fresh herbs at the end gives you that rich, restaurant-style flavour.

Cooking new dishes can feel daunting, but every “first” is a stepping stone. Even if it’s not flawless, you gain skills, confidence, and a story to tell.

This week taught me that stepping outside my usual go-to recipes makes the kitchen more exciting and who knows, maybe my buns will become your new family favourite or that steak will inspire your next date-night dinner.

So here’s to trying, learning and enjoying the process!
