If there’s one thing I’ll never get tired of, it’s a day in the Winelands and Stellenbosch Reserve is a gem! Rolling vineyards, mountain views and that perfect blend of rustic charm with modern elegance, the sunlit patios shaded by trees make you want to stay forever and forget about emails or chasing deadlines.
The menu is Mediterranean inspired with a proudly South African twist, imagine thin wood-fired pizzas with that irresistible just-baked aroma or slow roasted lamb that practically falls apart. I even spotted a pork belly dish that had me mentally planning my next visit.
We started with golden, lightly peppered calamari which was crisp on the outside, melt in your mouth tender on the inside paired with fresh rocket, zesty lemon wedges and a peppery aioli so good I considered dipping everything in it and zesty asparagus with some cheese toppings.
Then came the highlight: a perfectly seared fillet of fish on a bed of black bean rice that I’ve attempted to recreate once or twice.
Don’t get me started on the wine! The Moederkerk Chardonnay from their own Stellenbosch Reserve range was buttery and smooth with a whisper of citrus, it’s clear someone here knows how to pair a plate and a glass.
The service was warm and unpretentious, that’s how I got the ingredients for the fried rice! Whether you visit on a bright summer afternoon or in winter by the crackling fireplace, this is the kind of place you bookmark for every season.
My verdict? Stellenbosch Reserve isn’t just a restaurant nestled in the Cape Winelands, it’s a full sensory experience! The views, the wine, the atmosphere… all bottled up into one unforgettable escape.
Just book ahead, because you’re not the only one dreaming of this little slice of heaven.
